IP Rated Tablet PCs

IP rating (aka, International Protection or Ingress Protection) is an engineering standard that is often applied to rugged Tablet PCs. The IP ratings tell you how protected a rugged Tablet PC is against dust and water.

IP rating is represented by a 2 digit code. For example, most rugged Tablet PCs are rated IP54 or above. For the first number in the code, in this case 5 tells you how much resistance the device has against solids like dust and dirt. The second number, in this case 4 tells you how protected it is against water.

The following table details the IP rating codes. IP rated Tablet PCs are listed below.

First Number Protection against Solids (Dust, Dirt etc) Second Number Protection against Liquids (Water penetration)
0 No protection 0 No protection
1 Protection against entry of objects greater than 50 mm 1 Protection against water spray vertically (directly onto screen)
2 Protection against entry of objects greater than 12 mm 2 Protection against water spray from 15 degrees from its normal position
3 Protection against entry of objects greater than 2.5 mm 3 Protection from entry of water spray from 60 degrees from vertical
4 Protection against entry of objects greater than 1.0 mm 4 Protection from entry of water splashes or spray from all directions
5 Protected against entry, limited ingress detected but not enough to interfere with operation 5 Protection from a low pressure jet of water from all directions
6 Complete protection against entry of dust 6 Protection against heavy seas or a strong jet of water from all directions
